Lakadong turmeric is a premium, potent variety of turmeric grown in the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, India, renowned for having the highest curcumin content in the world, typically ranging from 7% to 12%, compared to 2-4% in regular turmeric. It is prized for its vibrant, deep golden-orange hue, distinctive earthy flavor, and powerful health benefits.
Key Characteristics
High Curcumin Content: The high concentration of curcumin, the active compound, makes it a potent natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agent. This high potency means a smaller quantity is needed for both culinary and medicinal uses.
Aroma and Flavor: It possesses a strong, earthy, and musky aroma with notes of ginger, honey, mandarin, and a hint of bitterness. This distinct flavor profile is more intense than common turmeric varieties.
Appearance: It has a vibrant, deep golden-yellow to orange color, which is a direct indicator of its high curcumin levels.
Origin and Cultivation: It is a unique, native heirloom variety that received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2024, certifying its specific origin and traditional farming methods. It's cultivated organically by local farmers in the region's specific, mineral-rich soil and moist climate without the use of chemical fertilisers or pesticides.
